What Is Global Consciousness?
Global
Consciousness is the ability
to understand global, cross-cultural
sources, and interconnections. When we understand what global consciousness is
it helps us to understand actions and values and acknowledge other cultures as
legitimate.
When we possess global consciousness we
are able to demonstrate open-mindedness, and act effectively in settings where language and culture are not native.
Global consciousness includes the
expectation that people understand domestic diversity issues (privilege, power,
societal “isms,” social justice)
Why
is Global Consciousness Important?
When we exhibit behaviours that
reveal an inclination toward equity; we master the understanding of the ways that
diversity and social justice issues play out globally.
Why Do We Need To Understand This
Skill
As our markets become more diverse so do our labour markets
and there is an increased need to understand global consciousness. Our
workforces are changing but they are not reflecting the impact of global
business.
How we think, communicate, form teams and do business is
changing. These trends contribute to the
new social and economic realities that are forming. The organisations that
embrace these changes are the ones that will thrive. As businesses now focus
more on inclusion; the feeling of belonging and acceptance. We need to be aware
that diversity doesn’t create inclusion. In fact in many cases diversity is
accompanied by barriers including bias, misunderstanding and a general lack of
cultural intelligence. It is these barriers that contribute to that lack of
inclusion in today’s multicultural workplaces.
Some organisations
fail to capitalise on their diversity. These organisations lack knowledge that
their changing cultural realities affect all processes within the organisation however
there are companies that are thriving, cashing in by constantly adjusting the
way they do business.
Developing This Skill
Cultural
intelligence is the capability to work across cultures and is a skill you can
develop.
Cross
Cultural Communication is a super skill needed to develop Cultural
Intelligence.
If you are
one of those highly motivated people within your organisation you will
understand the need to use the nine mega skills needed on your journey to
improve your cultural awareness.
How Can We Improve Our Global
Consciousness
Culture relates to our view of life and is socially learnt,
we then share this generation to generation. Some of these experiences are abstract
created from are learnt behaviours and experiences. The abstract views can be about religion,
personal beliefs, values and how we feel and think that we should behave in
certain situations. This means there are infinite different ways on how we are similar
and dissimilar.
Viewing culture one way or another actually limits our views
and increases bias it can narrow our perspectives and decrease our
understanding.
The more diverse experiences that we can have the more we can
increase our global consciousness. As we learn more about others, we then
increase our ability to integrate and modify are experiences.
Constant Awareness
The more culturally aware we are the more understanding we are
to others and tolerance is built as we learn to accept our differences and
similarities. This builds our constant awareness which is the key. The way we treat others reflects
on the way they will treat us. Without the motivation to learn we will not
persevere or adjust when we face setbacks or obstacles. Being aware of CQ is a bottom line issue for
ourselves and our organisation, it fuels motivation.
YOUR TURN
As your CQ increases so does your ability to identify our own skills in
the area of bottom line benefits. List three of your skills in the area of
cultural diversity and the benefits of each.
