What is Shifting Perspective?
Definition
‘
Shift your perspective’ – a phrase we often hear that refers to an observation or thinking practice. “Reflecting on a topic in a new way is a great way to problem solve. Shifting or even combining perspectives makes our minds work on a problem differently. It illuminates new ways forward that we previously could not see.”
It all about control, how we feel, think and behave when we need to make change depends on how we see the world and the environments around us.
The key to successfully doing this is understanding how you control yourself, and learn to influence, persuade and inspire others by shifting your perspective. If you good at doing this then you will know how to adapt it to your processes.
Why Is It Important?
As the customer and markets become more diverse so do labour
markets. Inclusion means more than just tolerating or putting up with
diversity. It's about adapting your business to be more versatile in these new
markets. The more experience you have of others people’s values and believes the
more you understand them and know how they interact. When we interact with
others better it becomes easier to shift perspectives. When we shift our perspectives
it alters what we see.
Our environments become quite different. The skills
to effectively communicate with those who are different from ourselves
depends on the awareness of ourselves and others, we must also be able to
understand this process.Cultural Intelligence has three aspects;
- Cognitive The way we Think
- Motivational What drives us
- Behavioural What effects what we do
When you understand
and use these skills effectively they have a direct effect on your bottom line. One way of maximizing
the potential benefits is by training workers to develop CQ.
CQ
is only important for some jobs and some people!
No one group has a monopoly on cultural ignorance or bias.
People of all colours, cultures, and backgrounds, regardless of position or
line of work, need to continually examine, develop, and refine their CQ.
It’s your Turn
The way we relate to others affects how they relate to us.
For example, we might be surprised by a negative reaction we get from others because
our values do not align with theirs.
Consider an everyday situation in your work place and
reflect on how someone from another culture would react to this, why they think
this way and how this is effected by their beliefs. This will assist you to me more mindful.
Identify one specific thing you can do on a regular basis to improve your
understanding of others.
